The Selma Housing Authority announces a federal grant — to create a plan to improve the quality of life of people who live in public housing.
For the next two years the Selma Housing Authority — will be working to create — and build support for a plan — to transform George Washington Carver Homes.
“This grant will give us planning money to plan for rehabilitation, demolition or whatever is decided through this plan to ensure that we can revitalize this community,” said SHA CEO Kennard Randolph
A $500,000 HUD Choice Neighborhood planning grant — $100,000 match from the housing authority — plus another $100,000 match from the city — is providing a $700,000 dollar investment into the future of the GWC community.
“What this grant does is it prepares you for a much larger grant which is the Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant which is up to $50 million dollars,” said Randolph.
“And so, it allows us to strategize ways to bring business to the community. Ways to bring industry, to improve education, to improve the area within the demographic around GWC Homes.”
The belief is — that a positive transformation at GWC — would have a similar impact — on the city as a whole.
“Yeah, it’ll change it,” said GWC resident Christopher Steele.
“It’ll make it a little bit more livable, more safer and more enjoyable for kids or anybody for to live here.”
